Like so many areas in and around Ontario and within the York Region, East Gwillimbury began to take shape in the late 18th Century. The interest in the area for habitation stemmed from the extension of Yonge Street to the village of Holland Landing from Lake Ontario. At the time, the Lieutenant charged with the duty of developing Upper Canada chose to name North East Gwillimbury after his wife (Elizabeth Gwillim). In 1850, the area officially became East Gwillimbury Township and in the latter part of the 19th Century, it became what it is today, the Town of East Gwillimbury.
